This South20 Jatoba hardwood-flooring product originates from the rain forest areas of Brazil Guyana, and Suriname. It is common for the Jatoba tree to reach 130 ft in height with trunk diameters of 5 to 6 ft; however it is usually less than l00 ft high with diameters of 2 to 4 ft. The wood product is produced by local natives specifically for South20 from the Jatoba tree that is native to these areas. South20 receives the material to the US in the form of raw cut lumber where it is placed in storage for air drying and kiln drying process. South20 will mill the lumber to specified dimensions to produce hardwood flooring and decking products.
Use:

Drying and Shrinkage:
This Jatoba Wood is rated as slightly difficult to air dry. It seasons at a fast to moderate rate with only slight checking and warp. Kiln schedule T3-C2 is suggested for 4/4 stock and T3-C1 for 8/4. Shrinkage to oven dry: radial 4.5
%; tangential 8.5%; volumetric 12.7%. These values are low for a wood of this density.
Working Properties:
The Jatoba Wood is moderately difficult to saw and machine largely because of its high density, but except in planning it can be machined to a smooth surface. The wood is somewhat difficult to plane because of the interlocked grain. It is easy to glue and finish satisfactorily with steam-bending properties comparable to white oak. Clear oil works best to bring out color and longevity.
Durability:
This Jatoba Wood flooring product is very durable as rated by field exposure trials. Heartwood is also rated very resistant to attack by decay fungi and dry wood termites. Heartwood is also rated very resistant to moisture. |
