This South20 Ipe hardwood-flooring product originates from the rain forest areas of Brazil, Guyana and Suriname. It is common for the Ipe tree to reach 100 ft in height with trunk diameters of 2 to 3 ft. The tree may grow to 140 to 150 in height with trunk diameters 6ft. The wood product is produced by local natives specifically for South20 from the Ipe tree that is native to these areas. South20 receives the material to the US in the form of raw cut lumber where it is placed in storage for air drying and kiln drying process. South20 will mill the lumber to specified dimensions to produce hardwood flooring and decking products.

Use:

Ipe Wood Flooring is recommended for wide use in outdoor decking and floor coverings of residential homes or historic dwellings with heavy human traffic. Those who prefer hardwood floors in lieu of the conventional ceramic or carpet covering should utilize this hardwood product. The South20 Ipe hardwood products offer one of the most durable woods on the market that will resist any sign of use and provide long lasting beauty. With the use of this product the covering becomes a permanent protection for the home or historic dwelling.

General Characteristics:

The Ipe Wood product's Heartwood is light to dark olive brown open with lighter or darker streaks. Sapwood is clearly distinct, yellowish to light beige around 2-9cm. The texture is fine to medium; luster low to medium; grain straight to very irregular & rather oily looking.

Drying and Shrinkage:

This lpe Wood Flooring is rated to air dry rapidly. It seasons at a fast to moderate rate with only slight checking and warp. Kiln schedule T3-Cl is suggested for 4/4 stock. Shrinkage green to oven dry: radial 6.6 %; tangential 8.0%. volumetric 1 3.2%. Movement after manufacture is rated as small.

Working Properties:


The Ipe Wood is moderately difficult to work especially with hand tools. The wood has a blunting effect on cutting edges and gnashes smoothly. It is easy to glue and finish satisfactorily. Clear oil works best to bring out color and longevity.

Durability:


This lpe Wood Flooring product is very durable as rated by geld exposure trials. Heartwood is also rated very resistant to attack by decay fungi and termites. The product is very resistant to water.
